WEBERN Five Movements, op 5
SCHUBERT "Death & the Maiden"
BRUCKNER Quintet in F
No strangers to our stage, the American String Quartet has performed for our audiences thirteen times since 1979, most recently in the fall of 2009. We look forward to their return when they will again collaborate with James Dunham, Professor of Viola and Chamber Music at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music.
Critics and colleagues hold the Quartet in high esteem. They perform the world over yet devote time to education as quartet in residence at both the Manhattan School of Music and the Aspen Music Festival.
They have performed the complete quartets of Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schoenberg and Bartok. In celebration of their 35th season, last year they released a new CD, entitled Schubert's Echo, which features works by Schubert, Berg and Webern. Schubert's chamber music had virtually no influence on his contemporaries because it was largely unknown in his lifetime. This recording reveals that Schubert did influence a later generation of Viennese composers. Watch as the members of the Quartet discuss this project.
